Soviet Sausage
Doktorskaya kolbasa (Russian: Докторская колбаса, literally "doctor's sausage") is a popular type of boiled sausage in Russia and the former Soviet republics.
It was first produced in 1936 and intended as a dietary supplement for people who suffered from malnutrition after the Russian Civil War, hence its name.
Because it was a mild-tasting, inexpensive and relatively healthy source of meat, Doctor's Sausage became very popular in the USSR and has a legacy in many recipes of former Soviet republics.
Today, it often features babies on its packaging with delightfully disturbing results.
